Googly Eyes

I was crashing at Katie’s place the other night, and she introduced me to possibly the best movie I’ve never heard of, right here on Hulu.com.

Directed by Danny Boyle, “A Life Less Ordinary” is the great all-around feel good movie of the 90s (sorry, “10 Things I Hate About You”). Featuring an all-star cast of Ewan McGregor, Cameron Diaz (hey, she’s not even that annoying in this movie!), Stanley Tucci, Holly Hunter, and yes, even Tony Shaloub, this movie hits every happy spot.

When a shabby but ambitious dreamer, Robert Lewis (McGregor) suddenly loses his job as a janitor, something inside him explodes. Angry at the establishment, he takes the company’s daughter, Cecille Naville (Cameron Diaz), hostage in a messy and poorly planned attack. With two angels riding on the couple’s relationship in the hopes that they, too, can keep their jobs as matchmakers, we witness a spectacular intervention of fate as Robert tries to be a felon in front of his equally devious hostage.

Beautifully filmed (as Katie points out, Boyle has a serious hard-on for aerial shots), tightly written, and wonderfully directed, A Life Less Ordinary is a solid bet if you’re at Blockbuster and feeling indecisive. OR, you can always just stream it online for free!
