editing reels

June 25, 2009

This post is intended to be an openĀ discussionĀ on the topic of the editing reel

1.) What’s the running time of the ideal editing reel?

2.) Is the editing reel cut to music or not?

3.) Is the editing reel supposed to stand alone as its own as an editing object or are the projects that you edited in the past the focus on this reel?

4.) Can you put movies on your editing reel that you have shoot but have not edited? (because it a way you are editing them)

What do you all think..

A reel is a creative representation of yourself, so a lot of those questions are your prerogative. I would say you want your reel to be no longer than 7 minutes, and probably preferably between 3 and 5. You can cut to music, but you can just cut between pieces with their own music, too. That’s a creative choice- there’s no rule. I’ve seen DVD reels that are just the past editing projects on their own, with a menu linking to each, and I’ve seen reels that are a mashup of past projects presented in a new way. Again, your choice.

For the last question, I’d say you definitely have the right to use footage you’ve shot in any way you want, including putting it on your editing reel. If you’ve only edited it and not shot it, you should have the right to include the piece as you cut it for the director, but probably not to use footage/cuts that aren’t in the original piece.

    thanks betty this is helpful!

I think that the first option you wrote about “DVD reels that are just the past editing projects on their own” seems a lot tidier than “reels that are a mashup of past projects presented in a new way”
but # 2 would probably be easier to make and quicker to display to people who are only going to watch it for like 20 seconds anyway.
